Splash VR – Social Media Examiner

Splash App VR

Last Friday our very own James Dearsley joined Social Media Examiner’s Michael Stelzner and Kimberly Reynolds to talk about Viorama’s Splash VR app.

Splash, a new app which is currently only available on iOS devices caught everyone’s attention at South by Southwest Interactive. The app which is created by Berlin based VR company Viorama have aimed to create a Snapchat-like platform for casual sharing in virtual reality.

In a nutshell, the app is like a hybrid of Periscope and Snapchat but all the content is 360-degree images and video. Splash allows its users to share 360-degree videos of your surroundings instantaneously and can be viewed on both smartphones and VR headsets such as Google Cardboard.

So what makes this app stand out? Splash’s main function of recording content using 360 degree views really stands out as well the fact you can record a video clip in parts of the frame (as seen in the video below).

James’ Thoughts on Splash VR

VR Industry

Last Friday we tried the app ourselves and as James mentions in the Blab (watch from the 40 minute mark in the embedded video below) is that Splash is very easy to use with just a couple of clicks and what he likes the most (from a consumer persepctive) is that you integrate small bits of video in with stationary photos, so you get a real hybrid VR experience. He shares his experience of using Splash and says it is not perfect – but it’s fantastic fun! Michael asks how long the video recording lasts and James gives him an insight telling him you get about thirty seconds of video in an immersive panorama. In addition, he shares futurist Robert Scoble’s experience of using Splash at a Guns N Roses concert by simply using freeze frames which creates both an immersive and interactive VR experience in the process. James also makes a key point about this current in app experience that we all familiar with these days. After the recording has been created, it can be directly shared into Facebook by one simple click, again the whole experience of recording and sharing makes the app really easy for people to use. James uses a Mark Zuckerberg quote in the Blab stating (about VR) “it’s the next platform after mobile” and there is some kind of define plan with the way companies such as Facebook will be utilising the likes of VR in the future. James stresses as marketers we are in a good position to deploy VR we just need to understand how to use it, apps like Splash give us an understanding on the concept. Industries such as the real estate industry as a result are having a field day as James explains as it is cost-effective. According to Goldman Sachs the VR industry by 2020 is going to be worth $80 billion and this year Deloitte have predicted that it is going to be a $1 billion dollar industry. Looking at those two numbers it clearly shows that across various industries VR is going to be a complete game changer.
