Artificial Intelligence is becoming more and more integrated into our society. As a community, we are super impressed by what AI can do but equally worried about how this will impact industry. For all the amazing things AI can do, however, there are occasions where it can go badly wrong!
There was the Microsoft incident, where the company famously created a chatbot that was built to learn how to converse with people based upon their Twitter feed. You remember the one? That’s right, it quickly became a racist, foul-mouthed bigot. Whoops.
In other instances, researchers have let AI loose online for the world at large to play with. One of these fortunate robots is the InspiroBot. It describes itself as “an artificial intelligence dedicated to generating unlimited amounts of unique inspirational quotes for endless enrichment of pointless human existence”.
These are just some of the quotes it has come up with for me today…
As you can see, it hasn’t quite gone according to plan! It’s gone insane and, in some cases, quite sinister. Some of the quotes are just meaningless and, well, uninspirational.
Currently, there is no information about how this bot is matching images and text together. On the flip side of this the question has to be asked: Are these weird quotes produced at random or are they intentional? Some of them seem suspiciously lucid…
In between each new quote generation, the InspiroBot offers little nuggets of its own. Some are pretty innocuous… but then there are ones that start to suggest the bot might be undergoing some sort of existential crisis:
Does anyone care though about InspiroBot?
Well, it seems that the answer is a resounding ‘yes’. Though it was initially launched back in 2015, in the AI rush that is 2017, InspiroBot has become something of a cult phenomenon. People are wasting countless hours generating guffaw-producing quotes and WhatsApping them to friends, sharing them to Facebook, and generally spending hours of their lives that they’ll never get back. What makes a bot that’s doing such an appalling job so popular? It’s probably something to do with people’s sick sense of humour…
When a peaceful image of a couple holding hands is juxtaposed with the text: “When the world ends, what we have strangled can’t be un-strangled” you can’t help but giggle. Likewise, there are the ones that are truly absurd: “A taxidermist usually doesn’t know that he’s a taxidermist”, and “You have the power to make it so that your girlfriend vomits” are just a couple that it – ahem – threw up for me.
