Your Weekly AR & VR Review

Hey everyone,

Time for this weeks review.

I have had a great week exploring the world of IoT, it’s such a fascinating sector and some of the technology I have come across this week has the potential to change the world or at least improve it.

Anyhow back to VR & AR, loads of cool stuff happening this week and I hope I captured the best of it for you. If anyone has anything they’d like to share in next week’s review please let me know and I will be happy to share it.

Right, let’s get on with it…

1.The Most Socially-Shared VR Story Of The Week

Not the most exciting article this week, never the less though, it is the most socially shared story of the week.

Surrey university goes virtual, they’ve developed a new app aimed at students who would like to learn more about the university and the local area, you can find out about your future accommodation, food & drink, entertainment and general things to do using 360-degree photographs and videos. It’s actually quite cool!

2. The Most Socially-Shared AR Story Of The Week

A really exciting story this week, who has tried Google glass before? I have, very briefly though and I was actually very impressed, however, I didn’t understand what it could be used for, was it designed for a purpose?

As it turns out, Google didn’t think it through and it completely flopped and it looked like it would never return, this was mainly due to privacy and it was said by some that it was uncountable.

As it turns out we were all wrong as Google has been quietly working away on a new version, not for the consumer, it has re-designed to be used in warehouses and factories and it sounds amazing, workers can view a piece of machinery and actually see what nuts and bolts go where, you can even take photo’s and ask for help.

3. Who Are The VR Adopters

Great infographic and it really highlights the fact that VR is becoming more and more mainstream, quick question though, what’s a megastore, is it an American thing?

4. WaveOptics raises $15.5 Million For AR Displays

I’ve been following WaveOptics for some time now and it’s great to see that they are doing so well, congratulations guys on the latest round of funding.

I love your AR displays and I imagine IKEA does as well, we’ve all been there haven’t we, searching frantically down the never ending aisles for your new table, bed, wardrobe, it’s no easy task as the warehouses are massive.

This tech will help to make shopping a more seamless action as it allows people to view the world around them whilst being able to show relevant data specific to your location and chosen goods, it’s fantastic in my opinion and a real game changer as I can see this type of technology being used in shopping centres, festivals’ warehouses, just to name a few.

4. Virtual Reality Can Be a Great Distraction

A bit of a sad story but it show’s the power of VR well!

Seth Oliva’s has T-cell lymphoma, a type of blood cancer that requires him to undergo chemotherapy sometimes three times a week

Seth loves VR though and his favourite virtual reality simulation game takes him through the human body, where microscopic parts like red and white blood cells are so close, it feels like he can touch them, a strange thing for a kid to like but hey, if that’s what he likes.

VR takes him away from the chemo and into a fun environment.

He says “They help me to get my mind off of all the things that are happening to me,”

I am glad that VR is being used for good as it’s such an amazing experience and if it can help to improve a little boy’s life, then great!
